Lockdown Drill

So besides having Fire and Earthquake Drills, we now have Lockdown Drills...
We need to practice how to shut ourselves in so that we may stay safe, and away from any harm.

We recently had a fatal shooting (after school on Dec. 21) amongst High School students (gang related) at a Middle School nearby (8 blocks away from the elementary school where I teach). ALL schools are now on "high" alert.

This incident upset me...both physically and emotionally. Schools are supposed to be safe!!

Since I have been at my school, we have had 3 lockdowns. One of them actually started before school, before anyone arrived. The entire neighborhood was locked down. School was closed on that day. The other two happened during the day. They both were due to an armed and somewhat dangerous person being in the neighborhood. I felt safe during both lockdowns but the thought is scary.

At our staff meeting this week we reviewed our safety policy. We have certain protocol for different events. My student teacher asked me yesterday what the protocol is if an intruder came in our room. (this of course was not in our booklet) I just looked at her and said "pray!"

coco, please do! try the "where I am from" please!
and if you want to know more about it (or even try it with your own students, in some fun way for their age group) you can look at this book

Me parece increible y aterrador, qué es lo que está pasando con las escuelas? Debe ser algo terrible de llevar emocionalmente...
